Winter Weather Driving

Winter weather is rapidly approaching in Wisconsin. Winter in Wisconsin frequently involves very cold or freezing temperatures, wind, snow, sleet and fog. All of these conditions make driving a more dangerous and difficult activity.

On December 4th, much of Wisconsin experienced the first accumulating snowfall of the winter. Because it has been so long since the last accumulating snowfall, many drivers are out of practice of driving in snow and other winter weather conditions.

Extra precaution needs to be taken when driving during winter weather. Here are some tips for driving in winter conditions:

  • Take time to accelerate and decelerate to help to avoid skidding
  • Drive slowly
  • Increase your following distance of other vehicles to eight to ten seconds
  • Do not drive distracted
  • Ensure that you wear your seatbelt

By following these tips, you can help to make your next drive in the winter weather conditions a safer one. Making sure you are not distracted is of the utmost importance because driving is more difficult and treacherous during winter weather. By ensuring that your full attention is on the road, you will be less likely to get into an accident.

Because winter weather makes driving more dangerous, whenever it is not necessary to drive somewhere, it is a good idea to stay at home until the conditions improve.

Do you have any tips for driving in winter weather?
