Warning Issued for Children's Teething Tablets

A warning has been issued for homeopathic teething tablets made by the company Hyland. The recall comes after the teething tablets were linked with ten deaths of children and around 400 negative reactions of children who have used the tablets.

The US Food and Drug Administration has isntructed parents and caregivers to stop using the product immediately. If the tablets are given to children and the child begins experiencing side effects, the child should be taken to a doctor immediately.

Some of the adverse side effects that have been linked with the tablets are fever, lethargy, vomiting, sleepiness, tremors, shortness of breath, and irritability.

The company Hyland has stated that it will discontinue to distribute the products in the United States.

There is not currently a recall issued for the company's products. The products affected by the warning include Hyland's Teething Tablets, Baby Teething Tablets Nighttime and Baby Teething Gel. Both CVS and Walgreens have pulled the products from their shelves after the FDA issued a warning about the products.

There was a recall on Hyland's products in 2010 because of inconsistent amounts of belladonna being found in the tablets. Since 2010, Hyland has stated that they reformulated their products to ensure their safety.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that instead of using tablets or gels to soothe teething children, parents and caregivers should use a clean finger to massage the gums, use a a teething ring or a wet washcloth that has been chilled in the freezer, or give them frozen fruit such as bananas and berries.
