Pedestrian Safety

Pedestrians are people who travel by foot, wheelchair, strolller or in similar fashion. Pedestrians are some of the most at rick people on the road. According to the CDC, in an 24 hour period, on average, 430 pedestrians will be treated in an emergency room for traffic related injuries and in the next 2 hours, on average, one pedestrian will die from injuries sustained in a traffic accident.

Here are some tips to help keep your next walk a safe one:

1. Always cross the street at the designated crosswalk or intersection when there is one available.

2. If you are walking at night, carry a flashlight and wear reflective clothing to increase your visibilty.

3. Always walk on the sidewalk when there is one available, but if there is not a sidewalk available, walk on the shoulder of the road facing traffic.

4. Avoid using electronic devices while you are walking because they can distract you from what is happening on the road.

Pedestrians have the right-of-way when they are within a crosswalk. IT is the responsibilty of vehicles to yield. to pedestrians who are crossing the road within the crosswalk. If the pedestrian wishes to cross the road outside of a crosswalk, they must yield the right-of-way to vehicles.

If you have been injured by a vehicle as a pedestrian, contact Martin Law Office for a free consultation.
