How to Change a Flat Tire

At one point or another, it is likely to happen to everyone. You're driving down the road, and suddenly your car pulls to one side and your hear the sound of a flat tire.

Although it is common for drivers to have roadside assistance services that will come and fix the flat tire for them, it is a good idea to know how to change a flat tire.

Here are some steps on how to change a flat tire safely:

Step 1: Locate a safe spot to pull over.

  • Try to pull over in a parking lot if possible.

Step 2: Turn on the hazard lights.

Step 3: Use a wrench to loosen the lug nuts.

  • Do not remove lug nuts yet; just loosen them.

Step 4: Use the jack to lift your vehicle off the ground.

  • Jack up the car until it is about 6 inches from the ground.

Step 5: Take the lug nuts off and pull the flat tire off.

  • Make sure to keep the lug nuts in a safe place, so they will be easy to find.

Step 6: Place the spare tire onto the lug nut posts.

Step 7: Put the lug nuts just tight enough that the spare tire will stay on.

Step 8: Use the car jack to bring the car back down to the ground.

Step 9: Fully tighten the lug nuts.

Step 10: Put the flat tire and any other tools or materials in your trunk.

Having the knowledge of how to change a flat tire can make the unfortunate situation of getting a flat tire less stressful and easier.
