Bicycle Safety

Bicycling is both a fun leisure activity and a way of transportation from place to place. Now that weather in Wisconsin is warmer, we are likely to see many more bicyclists on the road.

Like all activities, bicycling has risks associated with it. Here are some tips to help ensure that your next bicycle ride is safe and enjoyable:

  • Follow the traffic laws
  • Always make sure to look left and right before entering the road
  • Be predictable by riding in a straight line, using hand signals when you intend to turn, looking over your shoulder before changing lanes and riding in the right lane of the road
  • Go with the flow of traffic. Ride with traffic rather than against it
  • Do not use electronic devices while riding. They can cause distractions and put you more at risk of being in an accident
  • Be aware of your surroundings. Be on the lookout for things such as potholes in the road
  • Ride on bike paths and bike trails whenever possible
  • Ensure that you are visible. Wear bright colored and reflective clothing
  • Ensure that your bike is visible. Use lights and reflectors on your bike
  • Always wear a helmet
  • Do not ride your bike under the influence of alcohol. Alcohol can affect your judgment and relfexes making it unsafe to ride when you are not sober

These tips can help to prevent an accident and make the roads safer for bicyclists and drivers alike.

If you or a loved was injured in a bicycle accident, contact Martin Law Office for a free consultation.
